Roger Christian has long been entertaining children with stories and puppetry. This story is the result of meeting many friends throughout his life and realizing how important it is to trust in others as we go along the way. A 30-year veteran of the United States Postal Service, Roger has enjoyed the day-to-day interaction with people he has met and served. The Reluctant Letter has been developing for many years. It is a story that was told to the author's children when they were small and eventually became a puppet show to entertain children at the Ronald McDonald House in Dallas, Texas. The natural evolution of this story was to publish it in book form to be shared with children everywhere.
Hello, my name is Roger. I carry the mail. We used to be called mailmen. Now we are called letter carriers. I work in a neighborhood just like yours. The story I'm getting ready to tell happens everyday at the Post Office. It's about a letter written by a little girl - this little girl.
Her name is Margo. She has an older brother that calls her Cargo. It makes her so mad. (You know how brothers can be.) Her Grandpa calls her Angel. She likes being called Angel. Her Grandpa is very special to her. Tonight, after her shower, before she goes to bed, she has something very important she is going to do.
Her Grandpa's birthday is in four days. She is going to make him a birthday card all by herself! (If you listen real close you can hear the scissors cut her paper).
And special is what her letter was, because right before Margo's eyes, as she laid her letter down on the table, it opened it's eyes and began to speak.
