About the Book

The story of Anna Dengel, founder of the Society of Catholic Medical Missionaries, known worldwide as the Medical Mission Sisters, reads like a novel as this twentieth century pioneer time and again challenges the stereotypes restricting women in religion and society. She was determined to make professional medical care available to women and children in areas of the world where access to such services from men was forbidden; and she was equally determined that the institutional Roman Catholic Church would help facilitate such a mission. She not only lived to see that day. She helped to make it happen.

About the Author

Miriam Therese Winter, Ph.D., a Medical Mission Sister since 1955, is on the faculty of Hartford Seminary in Connecticut, where she founded and directs the Women’s Leadership Institute and the M.A. Degree in Transformative Leadership and Spirituality. She has authored a number of award-winning books: The Singer and the Song; WomanWisdom: A Feminist Lectionary and Psalter; Out of the Depths: The Story of Ludmila Javorova: Ordained Roman Catholic Priest; Paradoxology: Spirituality in a Quantum Universe; and is internationally known for her sacred folk songs and recordings, especially Joy is like the Rain; Gold, Incense, and Myrrh; WomanSong; and Mass of a Pilgrim People, recorded live at Carnegie Hall.
