Thief of Hearts

The rain was beginning to beat heavily against the window of the funeral car where we sat waiting for the rest of the mourners to get to their vehicles and take their positions behind us for the journey back to our house. Karen squeezed my hand bringing me back to the present. “I think we’re ready to go,” she said to me. “Er, yeah ok,” I said. “I was just thinking,” I added. “What of?” “That beach in Wales with that couple with the dog.” “Why them?” she looked at me slightly puzzled by this. “No reason, I just was, that’s all.” The driver started the engine and slowly pulled away from the church yard closely followed by everyone who had come that morning. We were minus one person on the return journey home, the most important one, Kaine…. I had thought of that beach in Wales with that older couple walking hand in hand along it with their dog barking excitedly at the breaking waves. It was such a tranquil scene, peaceful and carefree. I had imagined Karen and I, with Kaine a little older now, with our dog doing the same had we moved to Wales that time. But now those sweet thoughts would never be, Karen never did get to put those ribbons in pigtails on her little girl. Our world had ended that day, would it ever be the same again? It was too soon to even think. I felt suffocated and crushed by our sorrow for us. Time would now tell if time was to be the great healer it was said to be…. Neither myself or Karen had any idea as yet though that beneath the earth where our precious daughter now lay, the deeds of men lay dormant, and time the greater healer was eventually to reveal all…..
