About the Author

Elizabeth Barnes spent her childhood in Raleigh, North Carolina. She remembers the social and emotional challenges she faced during her school years. She began studying and researching the social and emotional issues and concerns of elementary-school children when her children began school. After several years, she began to design and implement Social and Emotional Learning curricula for elementary-schools in Massachusetts. These curricula are designed to help children build resilience and improve self-esteem, and to reduce violence and bullying in our schools.

However, since the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, she has learned that many schools have fewer resources and less time to focus on a Social and Emotional Learning curriculum. She has written A Family Guidebook on Bullies, Self-Esteem & Hidden Hurts! for parents and their elementary-school children to help them understand and deal with social and emotional issues that children face today. The topics and materials are adapted from the Social and Emotional Learning curriculum designed for elementary-schools. The easy-to-read information on specific topics and the suggested readings, worksheets, and role-plays encourage communication between parents and their children, and help children with their social interests and issues.

Elizabeth continues to instruct Social and Emotional Learning curricula for elementary-schools in Massachusetts and is a candidate for the degree of Masters of Social Work at Simmons College in Boston. She lives with her husband and two daughters.

Introduction

During the elementary-school years, children are challenged to appear confident, competent, reasonable, and calm.  They are also challenged to think logically, look at situations from multiple perspectives, and develop many adaptive strategies of self-regulation.  In order to help children develop their moral character, many schools have adopted a Social and Emotional Learning curriculum. These curricula are designed to help children build resilience and improve self-esteem and to reduce violence and bullying in our schools. However, since the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001,  many schools have fewer resources and less time to focus on a Social and Emotional Learning curriculum.

Research indicates that parental involvement in children's social and emotional development is a strong determinant of a child's sense of self.  It is also suggested that consistent, open dialogue between parents and their children on specific social interests and concerns helps improve communication, and helps children with resilience issues and self-esteem.

This family guidebook is designed to help parents and their children understand and deal with social and emotional issues that elementary-school children face today. Each section contains easy-to-read information on specific topics and encourages open dialogue through the suggested readings, worksheets, and role-plays.  The topics and materials are adapted from a Social and Emotional Learning curriculum taught in an elementary-school in Dedham, Massachusetts.
