It was early hour of the day, when Arjun woke up. He could hear a soft noise from the deck. At first he thought that the night guard was walking, so he tried to sleep again. But again he could hear the noise. This time he felt that it was coming from the door of their houseboat. There was a mild screetching sound of opening the door. Again there was silence . Arjun was sweating below the blanket. He knew that someone had entered their houseboat and at this hour no body would come with a good intention. He remembered that the doors of all the rooms were open. So, if somebody would like to enter their rooms, he could easily do so. He could suddenly hear the sound of some metallic thing dropping in the drawing room. He could understand, that in the darkness, the man, who had entered, had toppled the metal flower vase kept on the table near the sofa. He jumped up from the bed and moved towards the side of the door. From the slight gap in the door, he could see that in the corridoor moon beam had fallen. Suddenly, it became totally dark. He could not understand what had happened. Was it a cloud? Then he could realise that the man was standing just in front of his door and blocking the path of the moon beam. Arjun’s body became rigid. He was cursing himself that he did not have any weapon with him. He slowly moved a little sidewise. Suddenly, his hand touched the cold body of the metal flower vase. He held the vase in his hand.
He could see the moon beam again. That meant, the man had crossed his room. The next room belonged to Rajeev. Arjun’s sixth sense told him that this man was not an ordinary burglar. He had come to kill Rajeev. He had to do something to save his friend.
He opened the door silently. Now he could see the man from the backside. He was a well built person. He was wearing a heavy overcoat. Some weapon was there in his hand. But in the semi-darkness, he could not make out what it was. He advanced a few steps very silently towards the man. But the slight movement of Arjun made the man aware that somebody was behind him. He turned around. At that moment Arjun’s instinct told him,”Arjun! Hit him. Hit him hard with the vase. Don’t waste any time.”
But his hands were numb. He could not raise them. The man raised his hand holding a revolver towards Arjun. Arjun closed his eyes. He could hear a dull sound, followed by a heavy impact and a sharp pain at his right shoulder. He fell unconscious on the floor.
