From the heathered Scottish Highlands to the rugged Australian land down under, K9s are on patrol. Tracking through the Arctic blasts of Canadian winter or across the scorching desert heat of Arizona, they go where they are called. Thrashing through the dangerous jungles of Vietnam or patrolling through the magical green of England’s Sherwood Forest, memorable and dedicated dogs of beauty and valor serve with honor. Come along to the U.S. Capitol Building or hover in a helicopters over Indonesia with four-footed officers who protect and serve. Follow the hilarious tales of New Jersey’s Tracker and witness the astonishing heroics of dogs, both young and old, from the East Coast to the Deep South. Whether accompanying a crack SWAT unit or tenderly standing by the hospital bed of a sick child, the multi-faceted dogs will warm your heart. In this sequel to Badge on My Collar—A Chronicle of Courageous Canines, Marilyn Jeffers Walton takes you around the globe to ride along with dogs whose stellar careers and unselfish sacrifices exemplify the brave character and  profile of today’s police canine. The common thread among the geographically-distant dogs is their love of handler, their bravery in the face of confrontation with the “bad guys” and their total willingness to surrender their very lives in order to protect their handlers and the public. Highly-trained, intelligent and steeped in the deepest measure of devotion, this international collection of K9s cast a bright light on all dogs that protect and serve. They are truly the guardians of the night.

…Between security sweeps in Washington, Buffy began to shine as the canine hostess of Washington. Her friendly personality allowed her to graciously welcome visitors and guests to the Capitol.

…First night on post, Tom plopped down on the bunker and ate his C-rations as Rinny watched him closely. In the bright moonlight, Tom saw the sensitive eyes. Then Rinny put his front paws on each of Tom’s legs and licked his cheek

…For a wintry Canadian night, the weather could have been much harsher. Cinder had had such nights where she hunkered down with wind swirling white around her as she lay in the snow perfectly still except for the occasional shiver.

…As Ed had originally thought, during Conan’s career, his white coat never really presented a problem, except once when they searched an undeveloped area behind an old trucking company. Ed found out the hard way that the owners had discarded much of their used motor oil in the woods behind their lot. After sending the dog to search there, Conan emerged from the oil field a black dog.

…Far to the north on the eastern side of Scotland…lies a sparsely-populated area of vast terrain…The worried policewoman pointed in one direction towards the branch of a tree standing in the river, and Senga turned to swim as best she could…The man still held tight to Senga’s collar slowing her like a heavy anchor when she started to swim the other way. As hard as she could paddle, Senga slowly pulled the man along with her.

…Once a year, there was an exchange between the Royal Australian Air Force and the New Zealand Air Force. Duke was on his way to New Zealand….When their time in New Zealand ended, the team returned once more to Australia…Patrolling the base, Tricia could often see koalas lazily sleeping in the surrounding eucalyptus trees or crossing the road, and sometimes kangaroos with springs for legs jumped about.

…In the Phoenix valley, where sun-drenched Saguaro cacti stand like sentinels, August temperatures could rise to 122 degrees…John’s sergeant and lieutenant, who both commanded the SWAT team, arrived… The sergeant asked if John could deploy Leon given that the baby was seemingly in such a precarious position in such close proximity to the raving man.

…“See, when God made South Jersey, He said, ‘You know, sea level isn't low enough. Let’s make a big swampy hole in the middle of this woods right here, and I think I'll create a new plant to cover it all over. We'll call it ‘beggar patch’ and wrap it in another plant that we'll call ‘wait-a-minute vines.’…Wait-a-minute vines’ are those thorny vines with no leaves…as soon as you get into them, the first thing that comes out of your mouth is ‘Yow! Wait a minute!’…“Naturally, the detective that's with us already has an attitude, because he thinks we're on a wild goose chase… so he's gonna seize the opportunity to suggest that Snap took us the long way just to pee on that sign.”

…Vago was eager to join the chase and galloped up the street...turned right and ran onto the sidewalk of a bridge. Chris looked ahead watching the chase …The dog and suspect ran about thirty yards on the sidewalk of the bridge when the man reached for the top of a five-foot barrier wall that ran the length of the bridge…he leapt over it disappearing into the night with the dog following right behind him.

…In just nine minutes, a disturbed student went on a rampage and killed thirty-two fellow students at Virginia Tech University...Tom knew that he and Gina needed to be there to help heal the pain…In a hallway filled with bustling nurses and doctors, Gina Marie can often be found plodding along hooked to the wheelchair of a giggling child riding along in a vehicle suddenly transformed into a grand magic coach being pulled by a prized pony.

…As Bear faced the twilight of his career, he was involved in probably two of his highest-profile and most-satisfying police dog wins…a prisoner had escaped from the low-security Cadell Prison …The vastness of Australia meant it would take two-to-three days to drive from one side of South Australia to the other, and any work that Bear and Bryan did in the outback usually required a plane or helicopter.

…Two paths crossed that muggy Tennessee morning…A lone agitated man, holding two guns with his tattooed hands entered the Regions Bank…The dog was enraged. He saw the danger the robber presented and every inch of Aron’s body was geared to charge ahead and protect his handler from further assault…With renewed purpose, Aron thrashed through the woods to find the suspect and was soon out of sight.

…In the heart of coal mining country…the white frame residence sat fifteen-hundred feet above sea level and was the highest-dwelling in South Wales…Deterred by Saxon’s protectiveness, the brazen and profane youths resorted to throwing hunks of wood at Mike and Saxon from a safe distance. As the wood sailed towards the downed officer and the dog, Saxon tried to deflect the missiles with his body or catch them in his mouth.

…Modern-day Nottinghamshire was not spared its share of rats to catch, but these rats mostly ambulated on two legs instead of four… every chance that he got, he demonstrated his aversion to the dastardly fixture. When travelling at a high rate of speed with the typical English blue light flashing atop the van, Rudi felt compelled to work on the light’s wiring to the point of disabling the flashing warning light.

…SWAT deployed the first flash bang device with a deafening explosion…The team decided to act… so the door was breeched, and it was time for Shadow to enter…Before Shadow was fully-retired, he had one more assignment to fulfill. Granada Films, working with television’s Animal Planet Channel, visited with the Saint Paul K9 Unit proposing a series of shows featuring the dogs.
