The real Author’s comments: Beyond its lesson in history ‘Compassionate Magna Carta’ tells a story that’s based on real events about an English immigrant family whose ancestor Daniel Brietzcke - at the behest of the first Hanoverian King George I - journeyed in 1724 from his home in Lower Saxony to make a new life for himself in London. The story covers many ups and downs during the lives of six generations of this family: starting with Daniel Brietzcke’s arrival in London and continuing for the best part of two and a half centuries until the year 1960 when a catastrophic fire destroys the family home ... Following that catastrophe, the site upon which the Georgian mansion once stood remains an empty plot of land lying only a short distance away from the 2000 year old Yew Tree alongside which the original Magna Carta manuscript was sealed by England's King John, in the year 1215. Interestingly, it soon became apparent to me whilst writing this book that a substantially true story was becoming a metaphor for the bitter ideological disputes that took place in England between Catholics and Protestant Parliamentarians from the 16th to the 19th Centuries. It also appeared to me that this story is a paradigm (a story with a pattern) whose strands span that very important period in the history of western civilisation …namely, when Britain and America forged their special relationship on human rights. And, whilst I continued to write, I began to understand that the joint history of two great nations was so closely linked to England’s Magna Carta, that what I was writing, might stimulate an American readership. I also realised that the same historic 13th century manuscript had continuously connected our two nations ever since the year 1215 when England’s King John placed his seal upon the Magna Carta in order to deal with his own political crisis. I even began to understand the extent to which King John’s action had given rise to an Anglo Saxon link between two nations that would survive the American people’s gallant fight for their nation’s independence. Whilst a picture was also emerging that told me the very same Magna Carta manuscript had established the principle in western society that all people — including the King — are equally subject to the law. Moreover, this historic manuscript was the foundation stone upon which Anglo Saxon human rights and other democratic processes were established in both the United Kingdom and the United States of America: examples of which can be found in the USA’s National Anthem as well as its 1791 Bill of Rights viz. ... the freedom from unlawful searches and seizures ...the right to a speedy trial ...the right to a jury trial in both criminal and civil cases … the right to protection from loss of life, liberty and property. ‘Compassionate Magna Carta’ highlights some important events in British history relating to the age old danger surrounding King Henry VIII’s desire for Royal Supremacy: a Monarch’s desire that not only led to the public execution of King Charles I, but also to Oliver Cromwell’s eleven year Republican government. ‘Compassionate Magna Carta’ throws light upon the historical facts that led to a civil war between Round-Head Parliamentarians and King Charles I’s Cavalier army; and it later highlights Britain’s Glorious Revolution of 1688 ... a largely peaceful handover of power that provided Britain with its ‘unwritten constitution’,* whereby King James II’s son-in-law – a Protestant Dutchman named William of Orange who was married to King James’s daughter – came to England by invitation in order to replace his father-in-law as Monarch and was thereby answerable to an elected Parliament. ‘Compassionate Magna Carta’ tells how these events foreshadow the unsuccessful attempt by James II to regain his throne at the Battle of the Boyne, shortly before the 1701 Act of Settlement paves the way for King George I to reign as Great Britain’s first Hanoverian Monarch. *Between the years 1973 & 2019 the EUROPEAN COURT OF JUSTICE has overridden Great Britain’s ‘unwritten Constitution’. However, before joining the EU, Great Britain’s 1688 Glorious Revolution provided an ‘unwritten constitution’ that put SOVEREIGNTY solely in the hands of the Westminster Parliament.
