Painting a Salute to Veterans November 2013 The other morning, my commute was like living art. The road was a blank canvas. My car dipped its wheels in the colors of the start of day and tossed them up into the air where they were caught by the wings of geese that fluttered in aerial brush strokes painting an American scene to life. The clouds were bright like the Dress White uniforms of the Coast Guard. The sky became clear like I imagine it is for Air Force pilots who soar above the clouds. The land was camouflaged in Marine browns and greens and there were trees still holding on to leaves of Army green. This past weekend, Gary and I hiked the perimeter trail at Hargus Lake. It was late in the afternoon and the sun was at just the right angle to cast its light through the remaining leaves on the trees that became golden translucent in the bright light. The color of the water seemed to change with the direction of the trail. Deep green faded into the deep blue of the Navy. There were places in the trail where bridges have been placed and care has been taken to make the trail safe for those of us who choose to hike it. While not the tasks of the National Guard, and certainly not in response to an emergency, it made me think of the dedication of this military force. I know that when this column reaches you, it will be days past Veteran’s Day. Or will it? For isn't every day a day to celebrate those who have assumed the duty of protecting the American way? If not for their dedication to the colors red, white and blue, our lives would be painted in shades of darkness and despair. I am blown away by the beautiful colors I have experienced these last few days, but more than this, I am grateful and honored that I get to enjoy this natural palette of hues because others have chosen to protect the landscapes and portraits of America.
