About the Book

Poppy and Puppy Are Friends is a charming and informative picture book designed to encourage safe behavior around dogs for the entire family. The many responsibilities associated with having a dog are depicted throughout in an effort to create a general understanding of responsible dog ownership and animal husbandry at even the earliest age! Learning to “listen” to and communicate with a dog is paramount to successfully raising children and dogs within the same household. In our human world, we often forget that dogs use a nonverbal style of communication called body language to express their feelings. This lighthearted and expressively illustrated book provides children with a general introduction to identifying and respecting these nonverbal cues. Children will delight in the fun, brief text combined with the use of vivid color and grey tones, allowing them to chime in and/or anticipate what is to come for Poppy and her puppy. Parents are invited to partner with young readers and learn along the way! Proactive education promoting respect for animals with safety as a top priority creates happy pets, safe homes, and healthy family relationships … ultimately keeping more dogs in their homes and out of overpopulated shelters. Join Poppy in learning how to treat Puppy! The author pledges to donate a portion of all online sales proceeds to Best Friends Animal Society, the nation's largest animal sanctuary located in Kanab, Utah.

About the Author

Kimberly Burgan is a nationally recognized dog trainer and behavior consultant in Austin, Texas. She is the owner and operator of Kimberly Burgan Dog Training, specializing in behavior modification and obedience for the family pet. Dedicated to a teaching philosophy based on kindness, understanding, and two-sided communication, Kimberly teaches people to connect with their dogs through the use of positive and rewards-based techniques. Certified by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, Kimberly maintains a professional membership through the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and is among few trainers in the country to have achieved the designation of Accredited Canine Behavior Consultant by John Rogerson’s Northern Centre for Canine Behaviour. In 2005, she was awarded a fellowship with the Pet Behaviour Institute of England and received national recognition, in 2007, as Outstanding Dog Trainer of the Year by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. It is through mentors like the late Lee Mannix, and world-renowned behaviorist John Rogerson, that Kimberly has been able to develop her own sense of style and motivational approach to dogs. Kimberly grew up in San Diego, California. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, she fell in love with the city of dog lovers; she now calls Austin her home. Dogs—among many other pets—were always a large and important part of her life. It was, however, the complexity and beauty of the canine’s role within our human world that ignited an unquenchable curiosity in Kimberly. After leaving corporate America to follow her heart, Kimberly fully immersed herself in the professional dog-training industry. Today, as a mother, a pet professional, and a tireless advocate for dog-bite prevention, her sole purpose in dog training is to proactively educate owners on how to better communicate with their dogs… resulting in stronger, healthier relationships that ultimately keep more dogs in their homes and out of shelters.
