No one actually sees a sunrise in the jungle. You sense it and you feel it. It is more of an experience than an event. But you don’t see it with your eyes. The darkness slowly changes to daylight. This is what I live for--- one more sunrise.
I unwrap myself from my dingy poncho liner. The nights are warm enough that I really don’t need a blanket, but it keeps the mosquitoes off me. Slowly I arise from the shallow pit I dug last night for a foxhole, holding my rifle in my hand. My rifle has become a part of me by now, an extension of my body just like my foot or my arm.
Over to my left I hear Rodebaugh moving around. His thick New Jersey accent makes me think he’s swearing even when he’s just talking. He’s talking to Waycaster, the guy from West Virginia he shared a foxhole with last night.
To my right are Howard and Hernandez. “Happy” Howard is from the projects of Detroit and William Hernandez is from Puerto Rico. Out here we have no black or white, only olive drab, the color of our uniforms.

After spending a year in Germany as a security guard with the 50th Ordnance Company, Curtis Gay went to Viet Nam as a Private First Class. Six months later he was a Sergeant in the 25th Infantry Division and experienced some of the most intense fighting of the war. This book is his story.
Curtis spent a year as a Drill Sergeant at Fort Dix, New Jersey before leaving the Army in 1968. After a long career in the electrical industry, he is retired and lives in Durham, North Carolina with his wife.
