Shadows

When you went away, the leaves
Were turning orange, yellow and red.
I thought my heart was dead.
Instead, it went away with you.
I loved you so, I didn’t want you to go.
Now the days and weeks and months are passing slowly.

You went far away to a foreign land.
But you won’t be alone for I’ll be with you there.
I’ll be the shadow by your side,
And when things get rough,
I’ll reach up and clasp your hand,
And guide you through this dangerous land.

When I’m feeling sad and blue
And all I do is miss you,
I look around and there, is your shadow on the ground.
You reach up and clasp my hand then I know you’re all right.
Now I’m no longer sad and blue, but I still miss you.

You went away in the fall and the seasons came and went.
Winter, spring, summer and fall.
Then another winter came, with freezing cold and snow piled high.
When I heard you call out my name, I ran and threw open the door.
Then two shadows met and became one.

I’ll be the shadow by your side and you’ll be the shadow by me.

“This poem is dedicated to my grandchildren, Jessica and Andy Krogmeier.
I’m giving this poem to them, on the eve of Andy’s departure, to report for
Duty in the army to go to Iraq.”

Emails

My email is filled with junk mail and spam.
I wonder, how can they find out where I am?
Occasionally one appears to be a pornographic email.
I ask the computer, “where did that one come from”?

It’s like navigating a minefield,
With only a mouse for a weapon,
To click on all the boxes with x’s.

I click on “Delete” to get rid of the junk.
This consigns them to the trash heap.
Then the mouse and I give a sigh of relief.
Now we can read the emails we want to keep,
Then put the computer to sleep.

When next we awake the computer,
We find more junk mail and spam.
The mouse gives a squeak and I give a shriek.
Go back ye, go back ye, junk mail and spam.
Go back to where you came from.
If you don’t I’ll put you in the trash heap.
