Eulogy For an Old Negro Soldier
In a country neighborhood was our family
That included the Lady who sold whiskey.
Men would gather at her place
And drink that homemade stuff.
My dad was always at her place:
Losing control of his senses, getting drunk on that homemade stuff,
Sleeping and eating like a small child, that life for him was just enough.
Poor man, he was often drunk.
Grandpa said, “drunk as a skunk!”
Oops! How could we forget?
Our dad fought in a war
He was a World War II Vet:
Came back to the States and went through hell.
Out late at night, he gave up on life as well.
He tried to forget his welcome home.
And the horrors of war loomed
In the mind of this Black man,
Endured the smell and visions of death.
The Lady’s whiskey held the man:
A connoisseur of the war and whiskey, he developed a handicap,
Blotting regurgitated whiskey with a dirty hanky or dingy cap.
One day he cried and we cried, too,
‘Cause we didn’t know what to do.
He did drink his life away,
A casualty of war and whiskey.
A hard price he did pay:
He was a good soldier, a Negro soldier overlooked.

What makes this book different? Mom, You’re Ol’ Fashion is fiction, nonfiction, educational, biblical inspiring, and written in the past and present. While this book may appear to be a book about poetry, there are short stories in various forms such as the author’s version of a modern day ballad. The author used humor to address many of the complicated issues we face today. Mom, You’re Ol’ Fashion is a book that family members can share. Making it a family affair, the author included quotes written by her husband while he was an elementary school principal in the public school system.
About the Author
Beverly was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina. She was the second of four children. Beverly attended A & T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. There she met and married Gerald Terrell who is a retired Elementary School Principal and a Vice President of Core Knowledge Foundation. She later received a degree in psychology from the University of Virginia.
Beverly loves to entertain, much like her Grandmother. She indulges herself in drawing, designing clothes, crafts, writing poetry, culinary creations, designer dinners, gardening, and reading articles and books pertaining to history, mystery and criminal cases. She has been writing poetry since high school - writing on the paper inserts included in the pantyhose packages.
Beverly is also the music director for Union Ridge Baptist Church in Charlottesville, Virginia where the couple resides. She is the founder of Dee’s Designs, Inc. Dee’s Designs incorporates her crafts, fashion designs, alterations, greeting cards, gifts and encourage and comfort services.
