Megan tossed within the confining blanket beneath
the wagon, then fell into a deep sleep.
She clung to the stallion’s mane as she took one
last fearful look over her shoulder.
From the threatening clouds, an ebony hawk swooped downward, its eyes glinting
red fire, its talons splayed, razor-sharp.
The stallion charged ahead, galloping across the undulating
prairie.
She
tightened her legs around the beast. To
fall now would leave her as vulnerable as a field mouse to those menacing
claws. Above her head, she heard the
whoosh of the giant bird’s wings, felt its hot breath on her naked shoulders.
Where was James?
He must kill this devilish bird!
She tried to scream. Her mouth opened, but she could make no sound.
Into the night the stallion raced. Her heart raced with it. She felt the
pumping legs beneath her, the rhythmic pulsing of his massive body between her
thighs. She and the stallion became
one. A tingling spread throughout her
limbs. A strange ache gathered in her
lower belly.
They came to a wide black sea. The hawk’s eerie call screeched in her
ears. So near. Across the shadowed shore the horse
galloped.
A monstrous wave engulfed them. The stallion flailed against the suffocating
wall of water, swimming upward. She
clutched the beast’s thick mane, gasping for air.
“Megan.
Megan,” James Ryder’s voice whispered from somewhere beyond the wave.
Her senses reeled.
“What ...?”
“You were having a bad dream,” he answered, his
voice very close to her ear. He stroked
her arm.
She forced her eyes open. In the semi-darkness she became aware that she was lying on her
side. Her skirts had bunched up nearly
to her waist. His chest crushed against
her breast, his knee wedged tightly between her legs. Her right leg was drawn upward and rested on his thigh.
The blanket bound them together like a braided rope.

About the Book
In 1882, spirited Chicago seamstress, Megan Killeen,
leaves behind her troubled past and sets off on a train to Denver, eager to
start up her own ladies dress shop. Midway across the Kansas prairie, the train
is robbed and a dark-eyed outlaw takes Megan and a wagonload of stolen gold on
a wild getaway ride. How can she

seductive charms?
James Ryder, working as a secret agent, has
infiltrated an outlaw gang, risking his life to stop mounting Kansas train
robberies. Suddenly he is saddled with
a bank payroll and a flame-haired Irish fox.

to Denver –- and protect them from the skulking, vengeful gang leader, Jake
Wiley?

About the Author
Leslee Breene entertains a passion for writing
stories from the heart. For the past
seven years, her focus has centered on historical romance. In her continuing fascination with Western
history, she sets out to create flesh and blood women and men of the early West
in moments of adventure and courage.
In FOXFIRE, Ms. Breene’s first published
novel-length fiction, her heroine Megan Killeen was a delight to embody. The challenge was not to get carried away
with Megan’s Irish brogue. She admits
giving in to the idea of being carried away by hero, James Ryder.
The 1992 National Writers Association featured one
of her short stories in its anthology, OF HOBOS AND RAINBOWS. Snow
Angels of San Marcial won First Place in the 1998 BYLINE Magazine’s
Christmas short fiction contest.
She attended The University of Denver and, after
winning a Denver Fashion Group Scholarship, graduated from the Fashion
Institute of Technology, New York City.
She worked as a fashion illustrator in San Francisco for several years
before returning to Denver.
A believer in supporting fellow writers, Ms. Breene
is an active member of Colorado Romance Writers, Rocky Mountain Fiction
Writers, and Romance Writers of America.
