Miss Duck wrapped her brown shawl with the pattern of red, orange, and yellow leaves on it around her shoulders. As she stood on her porch, she took a breath of the brisk autumn air. She then sat in her favorite white wicker rocking chair and smiled. She had been looking forward to this night for many weeks. She could hear the laughter of youngsters as they ran along the sidewalk. In the dusk light, the safety reflectors they wore made them look like dancing fireflies. When she squinted her eyes, she could see many strange sights: a cowgirl followed by a clown, a hobo being chased by the sheriff, and even a gangster who looked rather rough. All of a sudden, two animals were on the path to her house. One was a mean-looking convict in a black-and-white striped suit with a cap. He was even dragging a ball on a chain with his hind paw. The other animal had a patch on his right eye and a red scarf wrapped around his head. He was a pirate for sure, thought Miss Duck. When they reached her porch, they stared right at her and shouted, "Trick or Treat, Miss Duck!" Not far behind the tough twosome was a face Miss Duck knew. It was her neighbor, Colonel Jeremiah Squirrel. After seeing him, she knew right away who the pair in front of her were. The convict was none other than Nutmeg, the Colonel’s grandson. His pirate sidekick was B.J., the Otters’ youngster from two streets down the road. Miss Duck had a bowl of wrapped candy sitting next to her rocker for just such a visit. For Nutmeg, B.J. and the Colonel, though, she also had a special treat ready. She left them for a moment and waddled into her kitchen. She soon returned with a tray full of peanut butter cookies and mugs of steaming hot apple cider. The youngsters each took a mug with one paw and as many cookies as they could hold with their other paw. When Miss Duck asked them what they had been doing for Halloween, they began to speak at the same time. They were very excited. "We went by the old Badger farmhouse after school today," Nutmeg said loudly. "It’s haunted, you know," chimed in B.J., "We saw it with our own eyes." By now, Nutmeg was spilling his cider as he jumped about saying, "It’s true! We saw his face in the window, the ghost of Tubblewood. He even waved at us, but we ran. We didn’t let him catch us. He is the most horrible on Halloween. Jessie Fox said so!" Miss Duck looked at the Colonel in surprise. He could tell that she was a little worried by the youngsters’ stories. "Now Miss Duck," the Colonel said in a calm voice, "Don’t let these two rascals scare you. I have heard tales about the Badger farmhouse being haunted for years. I have never believed it myself, although some folks in Tubblewood do. It seems a lot of strange things have been seen there. I am sure there is a reason for them besides a ghost." The convict and pirate shook their heads rapidly back-and-forth and looked at Miss Duck with wide eyes. She could tell that they had no doubts. They had seen the ghost of Tubblewood!

About the Author
Pamela Wilson currently resides in Austin, Texas, with her family of cats and dogs. She earned a BS in Zoology and a M.Ed. in Health Education, plus she is a Registered Veterinary Technician and a Certified Health Education Specialist. After working numerous years in an animal clinic, she established a career in veterinary public health. Additionally, she teaches veterinary medical terminology at a community college, plus she was named Texas Humane Educator for 2000. Ms. Wilson combined her educational and professional backgrounds with her appreciation of children’s literature into endearing stories to be treasured by folks of all ages throughout the seasons.
