Nurse Allen stood against the far wall just on the outer edge of a mirrored vanity. The bed was still made and a change of clothes lay at the foot that appeared to be hospital issue. She still wore the same uniform stained with blood from the night before. Red handprints were etched around the rim of her pockets and her hair hung in wet clumps about her shoulders. Her eyes were wide with a fear ridden sense of dread and doubt. Thomas felt sure that Edith Allen had nothing to do with Mrs. Flinchum's murder but something about it was nibbling at the back of his mind.
Thomas pulled over a chair in front of the doorway and closed the door. He thought he would sit and observe for a few moments. Thomas stared at the floor but Edith continued to stare at nothing, at least nothing inside that hospital room. It was as though she had been violated. Thomas knew that look. The look that told him every detail about from the time that person had their first cup of coffee that morning, to the ride in the police car and to the chair sitting across from him at his desk where a woman had been raped or abused. Except this wasn't abuse or rape, this was something more. A person in time can get over physical rape or injustice but in matters of the mind, that was forever.
