Night after night I reported from the field, and anchored from the news desk. To a metropolitan Detroit television audience of millions I appeared affable, jovial, capable, and professional.
I had worked my way from the weekend to the weeknights and from the small-time to the big show. I’d won coveted awards including an Emmy and earned professional respect and recognition.
I had a high profile and a big paycheck. I drove an expensive convertible and lived in an exclusive high-rise. My closet was stocked with suits of every cut and every fabric in every color. I had racks of expensive shoes and could match hundreds of ties with hundreds of dress shirts.
Nightly access to the television airwaves gave me power and influence and the ability to earn the respect and admiration of strangers who considered me family.
I got hugs and kisses from mothers and grandmothers at the grocery store, the finest tables at restaurants without reservations and warm smiles and waves from people whose cars I passed in traffic.
I flew in first class to take lavish and expensive vacations at exclusive resorts. I ate what I pleased, drank what I wanted, consumed and indulged my every desire.
But none of that worked. I couldn’t become the person that having and doing all those things would seem to represent.
The plain and simple truth is that I was just damaged. If I had to give the sickness a name, I’d just call it damaged. I’d been dropped right out of the box and I needed to be fixed.
I was usually envied or pitied; encouraged or chastised. I was advised to pull myself together or suck it up and move on.
What I needed was to be fixed. I was broken, beat up, in disrepair. Damaged.
I’d never gotten past being abandoned and orphaned, I’d never gotten over being abused, raped and molested as a child, and I’d never broken free of being trapped in addiction.
And so eventually I was reduced to the man whose reflection I saw at the bottom of a full-length mirror one night in the bedroom of my apartment. It was a night spent like so many countless others. I was on my knees, one hand tightly gripping the glass pipe I’d been holding for hours, perhaps even days.
It was very easy and common to lose track of time in the haze of smoking pure Cocaine. You might glance up at the clock and read 1:05 and then after what seemed like a few minutes look again and see 1:15; except before it was 1:05 am and now its 1:15 pm and perhaps even on a different day.
Anyway, there I was on my knees trying to balance on my elbow...

Frank Turner is the Emmy winning former co-anchor of the highest rated 5 p.m. television newscast in Detroit. He is also a Pastor, Evangelist and author of the new book Raised from the Dead—The Personal Testimony of America’s First Evangelical Anchorman.
