As seductively as she had begun, she broke the kiss. Sliding smoothly away from him, she closed her robe. "This is as far as I intent to go without you conforming to my request."
He felt foolishly toyed with. And to top it all, his errand arousal was plainly detectable from under his silk nightshirt allowing her to see how easily he had fallen into her spell. Damn the woman. Anger, or perhaps frustration boiled through him, but he was determined not to let her notice it. He met her eyes straight on and managed a cool and collect statement. "Although your high self esteem is a superb quality, I have to confess, that just because you kiss…nice, does not guarantee you will be a competent bed partner."
"Oh, I think I shall be more than a competent partner. But only if you agree to hold me as the only woman in your bed, will I agree to make a child with you. So you see, my husband, I am not refusing you. You can hardly complaint about this request to my uncle, or to the church."
The woman was right. No matter how common it was for husbands to take on a concubine, the church did indeed condemn adultery and that was all she was requiring of him to carry out her duties as a wife. "You think you have it all figured out. What if I concur to your demand and change my mind after bedding you? I believe that is what most men do."
