The Sixth Trial of Jesus:
Before Pilate Second Time, Second Acquittal
Matthew 27:15-26; Mark 15:6-15; Luke 23:13-25; John 18:39-40; 19:1-16a
Now at that feast the governor was wont <accustomed> to release unto the people one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. And there was one they had then, a notable prisoner called Barabbas (who for murder committed in a certain sedition made in the city, was cast into prison, <and> who lay bound with them that had made the insurrection with him). Now Barabbas was a robber.
And Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people. Therefore when they were gathered together, he said unto them,
"Ye have brought this man <Jesus> unto me, as one that perverteth the people, and behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him. No, nor yet Herod, for I sent you to him, and lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto <by> him. But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one <prisoner> at the passover." And the multitude, crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them <release a prisoner>.
"I will therefore chastise him <Jesus>, and release him." (For of necessity he must release one <prisoner> unto them at the passover feast.) And they cried out all at once, saying,
"Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas!" Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again unto them. But they cried out,
"Crucify him!"
"Crucify him!" But Pilate answered them saying,
"Whom will ye that I release unto you? Will ye that I release Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ <Messiah>, the king of the Jews?" For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy <spite, anger, hatred>. But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. Then cried they all again, saying,
"Not this man, but Barabbas!" The governor answered and said unto them,
"Whether of the twain < which of the two> will ye that I release unto you?" They said,
"Barabbas!" Pilate saith unto them,

There are four gospels in the Bible, each telling the story of Jesus. Some episodes are included in each gospel which are omitted by one or more of the other three gospels. Some details included in one gospel are not found in the telling of the same episode in the other gospels.
Therefore, this editor has sought to combine the four gospels with all the details and nuances of all four into a single narrative without adding to or omitting any event, dialogue or comment which the four evangelists wrote.
About the Author
The editor of JESUS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY, Richard W. Luebbert, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, is a Master of Divinity graduate (with Hebrew and Greek) of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana; a Bachelor of Arts graduate of Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri; attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma; and an Associate in Arts Degree graduate of Hannibal LaGrange College, (now University) in Hannibal, Missouri.
He is married to the former Miss Dorothy Fay Embree of Moberly, Missouri. They have two children, Joy Luebbert Bolton, Executive Director, Kentucky Woman’s Missionary Union, and R. Wesley Luebbert, a transportation entrepeneur of Lexington, South Carolina.
The Luebberts have served churches in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Missouri. They now share a home in Shelbyville, Kentucky with their daughter and son-in-law, Rev. R. Lee Bolton. Luebbert teaches a Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church of Shelbyville.
