Mags leapt with fright when she came through the door of her flat and found Noel sitting there with the curtains closed. The room was pitch dark.
‘Jesus, Noel! Yeh gave me an awful fright,’ she said, as she searched for the light switch.
‘Who were yeh fuckin expectin?’ he asked.
She stood frozen to the spot. He was drunk again.
‘Yer home early,’ she tried to make her voice sound light. ‘Is everythin alright?’
‘Did I spoil yer plans?’ he snarled. ‘Who the fuck was that bloke who knocked here today?’
Mags’s head was spinning! What was he talking about?
‘What bloke, Noel?’
‘What bloke, Noel,’ he mimicked. ‘The fuckin bastard who knocked on my door today, and wanted to know who lived here? As if he didn’t know you lived here, yeh slut. Who is he?’ he suddenly roared at her.
The children were huddled in a corner terrified. And then it came to her, the people who were making the movie. She opened her mouth to explain, but it was too late. He lunged at her. She heard her nose crack as he head butted her in the face. She couldn’t count the punches. She was trying to stop the blood from her nose rolling back into her throat as she went down.
Please God don’t let him hurt the kids, was the last thing she thought before she blacked out.

After years of affairs always settling for less, she finds herself thinking more and more of Sam. On the day she’s burying her father she sees him across the graveyard.
Mary watched them all as she grew up: her mother and her aunts. They always seemed to go from one disastrous situation to another. She was afraid she would grow up like them. She never got over her father leaving her as a child. All she ever wanted was a normal family life. But no one was going to rescue her from her pill-popping mother, or her abusing grandfather. She dreamed of a day when her father would come back for her.
