“Oh, Theo,” I whisper.
“OH, THHHEEEEOOOO!” someone squeals. I wake up with a start. There are “The Five” girls that I watch over; bug eyed, each holding a stuffed animal.
“Were you dreaming about Theo again, Kennedy?” asked Lauren, the oldest, yet, smallest sister.
“Ya, Kennedy, who were you kissing?” Kelsey asked sheepishly. Kelsey was my favorite, by far, as did everyone know. She had long, purple hair (that she
dyed of course) and she was average height with big green beautiful eyes. Today she was wearing black combat boots, a big sweater, and leggings.
“I was not! Who’s Theo?” I said, jolting up out of bed and slipping on my dress. “Besides, you guys should be getting ready for school.”
“We don’t have school. It’s Saturday and Mom’s outta town. That means we have the whole day with you,” Lauren explained.
“Are you finally going to tell us the story behind all this Theo nonsense?” pleaded Stephanie, the youngest. She had curly red hair that bounced whenever
she moved and was holding a ratty old bunny she got when she was born 7 years ago.
“Maybe when you’re older. Besides, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I answered.
“Oh, puh-lease! Kennedy, we all know that you love this guy. Just tell us! We can help you,” Ali yelled, impatiently.
“Will you, please? For us? I mean, really. What harm can be done?” finished off Kameron.
I stopped and thought for a moment. I’m thirty years old. I was in seventh grade when everything happened. I was freaking thirteen! Seventeen years I had
been holding on to something that ended in despair, hurt, and loss. Well, maybe it might be good to just get it out. I have no friends, a crappy, yet
bittersweet job, and no money. My hair was a mess: its short, wavy locks in a makeshift Afro, and I had more than 100 coffee stains on my dress that was a
disgustingly long, pewter color. What could I lose?
“You guys really want to know don’t you—?”
“YES!” They screamed in unison.
“Please do!” Kelsey patted my arm.
“We’re here for you, no matter what!” Stephanie agreed.
“Aw. You guys! I love you all so much.” I grabbed them all in a group hug. “Okay, but before we start, go put your pajamas on. This is going to be a long
day.”
All five of them bounced up and bolted for their respective rooms. I threw my pajamas back on and skipped to the kitchen. I made popcorn, grabbed the
Cheetoh Puffs that were hidden in the pantry, and barely caught the Dr. Pepper before it fell to the ground.
When I arrived back at my room, Kelsey was there dressed in her volleyball t-shirt and spandex. I would say she was the most well behaved child. Being the
middle child, you kind of had to keep the family from falling apart, and she did it perfectly. As if on cue, Stephanie, Lauren, Ali, and Kameron filed in,
all wearing their own pajamas. They bounced on the beanbags and positioned themselves in various ways: Kameron lying upside down, Lauren crisscrossed,
Kelsey hugging her knees, Ali in pike position, and lastly, little Stephanie on her tummy.
