They paused at the mouth of the tunnel, blinking against the sunlight that shone down between the mossy rocks. "What's their arsenal?" Wolf wanted to know.
"Spears and knives," Drake replied. "Short range stuff. Maybe arrows, but I didn't see any. We can take them from a distance."
Wolf shook his head. "Not if they're close to the girl."
"Can you get close to them?" Drake asked skeptically. "Marakov said they were taking her to a pit. He called it the pit."
"Are you ready?" Wolf asked in return, ignoring the question as he took a moment to tighten the straps of the knife sheath around his forearm.
"Where's your weapon?" Drake asked, his pistol at the ready.
"You think we'll need more than one?" Wolf replied. "You're really not going to tell me who you are?" Drake could not help persisting. "You're not just some Eagle pilot. Once upon a time, maybe, but not now. Are you on the books?" Wolf shook his head. "CT4?" Drake guessed. "I'm not something the average Canadian wants to know about," Wolf replied. Drake stared for a moment, but then gave an understanding nod. "Yeah," he muttered. "The Airborne had a few missions like that, too." "Go," Wolf said. Drake came out of the tunnel in one smooth stride, his pistol barrel leading the way. Wolf was only a step behind him as they rose above the forest floor, their eyes sweeping every visible inch of the Deeps. There was no one else in sight.
