About the Author

Susan Monson is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Registered Play Therapist with specialized training in working with children, adolescents and their families.

Susan was born and raised in Osceola, Indiana.  She graduated from Indiana State University in 1970 with a B.S. in Education, K-8.  In 1973, she earned a M.S. from Indiana University.  She taught second grade for 5 years in Brownsburg, Indiana.

In 1990, Susan taught second grade at the United Methodist private school in Lake Charles, Louisiana.  In 1993, she earned a M.Ed. in counseling from the University of Arkansas.

Susan has served as an Elementary School Counselor for 5 years, a Middle School Counselor for 9 years, and a therapist in private practice for 10 years working with children, families and individuals.  She was awarded the School Counselor of the Year for Northwest Arkansas in 2002, and also, received the School Counselor of the Year Award for the State of Arkansas in 2002.

Susan’s first children’s picture book, “I Forgot!” was released in 2007 and is the first in a series.  It features Ralph, the field mouse, and is designed for parents and grandparents to READ WITH THEIR CHILDREN.  The ADULT section at the back of the book provides help with teaching principles and values presented in the story.

AGITATION:  Your Child's Begging and Whining

Your Child Agitates

Think of begging and whining in terms of annoying behavior.  Agitation is when your child disengages her brain which could be used to solve a problem.  Instead, your child fidgets away the feelings verbally or physically.  An example of this kind of agitation follows:

You need to make a trip to the grocery store and you ask your child to stay with a neighbor family while you're gone.  Your child wants to go along and asks,

"Please Mama, can I go, too?"

You think about it and allow your child to go.

The grocery shopping goes well and you and your child are having fun looking at various items on each aisle.  Now it's time to check out and you push the cart near the checkout area.  Suddenly, your child becomes alien-possessed!!

"Can I have these Jolly Ranchers?" your child asks politely.  "No, not today," you also answer politely.

"Please can I just get this little one?" asks your child in a sing-song little voice, holding up some M&Ms.  (over-adaptation)  "No, honey, I said not today!" you again answer politely, sticking to your guns!
