“The Magic Thought – Can’t Happen to Me” is broken into three parts. Part I – Journey to Personal and Health and Safety Commitment - The first part is dedicated to taking responsibility and being committed. We look at 4 crossroads to journey past. Each crossroad explains the behavioural traits with a chapter on recommendations to move forward. The 1st crossroad “On the Beach” helps you stop blaming and pointing fingers. It talks about how your attitudes affect both your personal and professional life and most important, how your health, safety and wellbeing can be affected when you are here in body but not in mind and when you don’t take responsibility. The 2nd crossroad talks about how to master your fears and the detrimental affects when you are a bully at work and at home. We look at the importance of making other people happy instead of always making withdrawals which is draining for the people around you. We talk about what you can do, not what you can’t do. The 3rd crossroad talks about how “complacency” affects our life when we are unwilling to change. The 4th crossroad is the “firefighter.” Although you are extremely motivated you are often reactive instead of proactive leaving yourself wide open to potential heart failure. The 5th crossroad is where we all want to operate. We want to be “committed” and take “responsibility” for our life 24/7.
Part II – Tools for Success - You have addressed your behaviours and have agreed that your true success rests in you taking charge while being committed and taking responsibility. The second section gives you a toolkit for your success as a person and as an organization. We address what is your vision as an organization and what do you personally want to achieve in your life. We look at your mission and values. How are you going to reach the end goal? We learn that our success comes when we can communicate effectively, when we give people voice, dignity, trust, respect and when we have integrity, are honest and loyal while, being a team player. We realize that during these times of excessive juggling we need to have good time management skills with the ability to delegate effectively. We learn the importance of health and wellness and how to effectively coach. From there we move onto performance feedback. Whether you are giving feedback to your child or feedback to a fellow employee, we soon realize the importance of showing people you appreciate their efforts through positive feedback or letting them know where they can improve. Lastly, she talks about silence = permission. If we allow an undesired behavior, the behavior continues whether we are at home or at work. Learn the art of developing a progressive improvement plan for positive change.
Part III – Health and Safety Key Elements - This section provides a step by step process in building a positive health and safety culture. Judy has taken her vast expertise in developing health and safety systems that are integrated into existing management systems and shared them with the readers.
