About the Author
I grew up in a small town with big dreams.  Throughout my childhood, I frequently lost myself in fairy tales and adventures from the storybooks and novels that I spent many hours indulging in.
In High School, I enjoyed Creative Writing classes.  I dreamed of a writing career and considered a degree in journalism.  However, life got in the way, as it sometimes does.  After High School, I soon found myself married and raising a family.  Within Ten years, I gave birth to four daughters, along with raising two step children.
Taking care of people was natural to me, as was teaching.  Thus I began to envision myself as a nurse, although, I still enjoyed writing and telling stories.  After a devastating divorce, I somehow found the inner strength and faced the challenge of nursing school.  At the age of forty-one, I had earned my Associate's Degree in nursing and began my new life as a Registered Nurse.
Soon after, I took on the biggest challenge of my life; I became a jailhouse nurse!
Now, ten years later, I have decided to pursue my childhood dream.....to write!

Every time I looked at that old elevator, or found myself riding on it, I remembered a horrifying story that was told to my while I was still a rookie jailhouse nurse.  I was told a tale of a shocking incident that hopefully only occurred once at the old county jail.
Sergeant Lopez, who was a deputy at the time, was escorting two inmates, who I will call Jack and Pete, to their housing units after returning from court one afternoon.  Unfortunately for Deputy Lopez, in his haste, he had already removed all of their chains, thus unbinding their legs and their arms.  After all, he thought, "What would it hurt" their cell were just a few feet away.
Suddenly, just when Lopez least expected anything to occur, out of the blue, a very irate Jack shoved an unsuspecting Pete, and a fight quickly commenced!  Who really knows what instigated that squabble?  Maybe Pete stole some of Jack's commissary, or perhaps Pete snored all night long and kept Jack awake.  At any rate, as the fight rapidly escalated, the panicked Deputy anxiously reached for his radio and called for back up!  Poor Lopez was in such a terrible frenzy, for everything happened so fast!
Pete, who was feeling provoked, ferociously shoved Jack up against the wall near the elevator.  In fact, Jack was thrust against the wall so hard, that his elbow struck the control button and thus accidently opened the elevator doors!  But shockingly, only the dark and frightful shaft was present, since the elevator car was dangling high above their heads!
With great rage, Jack who was still pinned against the wall grabbed Pete's collar with both hands.  With all the strength that he could muster, Jack brutally shoved Pete backwards, and then with a violent turn, he swiftly hurled a screaming Pete down into the elevator shaft!
Within seconds, four other deputies arrived on the scene.  Their bodies became motionless from the intense fear that instantly invaded their souls!  With petrified expressions upon their young faces, they stood at the edge of the elevator shaft in absolute disbelief, as they intently stared down into the deep, dark pit of death!  This must have been a horrible nightmare for all who were present, since discovering the elevator door open with a man sprawled on the shaft floor was the last thing that they would have ever expected to see!
As the horror-struck deputies gazed downward into the cold, dark abyss, they could see Pete helplessly lying on the ground!  Moaning and groaning, he shouted, "My ankle is broken!  Somebody help me!  I can't walk!  Get me out of here, man!  I don't want to die down here!  Somebody help me please!"
Deputy Lopez's adrenaline must have been at its peak!  Even though he was relieved that the inmate was still alive, he knew that it was just a matter of time before the elevator car would return to the basement!  And, if immediate action wasn't taken, Pete would be crushed to death!  As he stared upward at the bottom of the elevator car that dangled two stories over his head, Deputy Lopez courageously jumped into the dark and deadly elevator shaft.....................................................................
