About the Book

Since its conception mankind has sought answers to questions that would enable us to define who we are and our role in the grand scheme of "things". Of the numerous questions posed, I feel that those concerned with human behavior are perhaps the most important. What governs our behavior?  Why do "good"people do "bad" things? What lies ahead ? I address these questions and many more in my text using a novel, fresh approach, a lyrical format. Using this format, I provide examples ("songs") which illuminates the "darkside" of human behavior. The goal of my work is to ask the reader to recognize and identify the "darkness" that resides within themselves and others and utilize this "dark energy" in a socially acceptable manner to avert disaster, or individually, lead themselves towards self-actualization.

This text will have wide-ranging appeal. Teenagers will enjoy relating to "songs" reflecting their daily concerns, while young adults could perceive the deeper implications. Older adults could identify with a more diverse number of topics as they reflect upon their lives and contemplate their futures. Additionally, it may yield special appeal to musicians and composers of all ages, as well as all those with a interest in Comparative Studies, Literature, and/or the Humanities.

A blank page is included, adjacent to each "song" to encourage the reader to jot down their immediate  response to a particular "song"  or add a chorus or addition based on their personal experiences which may be sent to the author for possible inclusion in a follow-up text. About the Author

I am, by trade, an Optometrist and Vision Scientist with a background in psychology. I am a graduate of The Ohio State University and received a Doctor of Optometry degree in 1986, a Masters of Science degree in 1989, and a Ph.D. in 1992. I have practiced successfully for 20+ years and have participated in numerous research projects.

Besides my professional interests, my hobbies include music (I compose and listen to a variety of music as well as play several instruments including bassoon, saxophone, guitar, and keyboards), astronomy, and sports. I cite Dante and Baudelaire as literary influences, but my favorite author remains Arthur C. Clarke.

I have been fortunate to have a number of scientific articles published in peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals and have had a number of my award-winning "songs" included in compilation poetry texts sponsored by the International Society of Poets, however, this is my initial attempt at producing a cohesive, theme oriented text and I hope my readers will enjoy the experience.

                 The Maintenance Crew

I remember our voyage to earth like it happened yesterday,

for the first time since Eden mankind had finally found its way.

As their guns fell silent, after so many years,

we prepared for our assignment, through welled up tears.

None of us can be exactly sure how or why it started.

We only know their fate was sealed long before we departed.

those who believed that through repentance they would live on,

typically were the first to face oblivion,

then one by one, the others, in turn would fall

until the spectre of death had claimed them all.

As we stacked their bodies not a single tear was shed

nor any ceremonies held to honor the dead.

We then lit the pyres and watched the flames dance as their bodies burned

with great appreciation for the new lease this planet had earned.

Blown along by the wind the last vestige of humanity flies,

but each of us left confidently knowing not everything dies.

Heart felt love, peace, joy, and harmony remained,

all they had forgotten is what we maintained.

Lousy Reception

Well, yeah, sure, of course I hear voices inside my head,

but I've never understood a single word they've said.

So low in frequency, intensity, and in pitch I can not tell if

they're in Chinese, French, or Spanish.

My life would be much better if guided by voices,

making fewer mistakes or at least better choices.

I would exude confidence and be more self-assured,

but instead I feel small, bullied, and pressured.

Speak to me my voices, clearly for both of our sake.

I need help in deciding what actions I should take.

swear I'll listen, no matter which laws I might break.

Damn you stupid voices, speak so I can understand.

This is not just a request. It is my first command!

You know I'm insecure and fail without exception,

please find a way, to improve, this lousy reception.
