An electric, horrified look passed between the two men. Marc shot up, palms hard on the table, and in a chilling voice asked, “You have a cell phone with you? Where is it?”

“Well, I guess it’s …”

“Where is it?” Marc shouted, making her jump.

“In my room, in my purse…what’s wrong?” Upset, Lindy could see panic in their faces.

“Go, Marc!” Mike said sharply, looking over Lindy’s head. “Hurry!”

Marc ran hard. Feet pounding, they could still hear him as he reached the top landing.

“What is it?” Lindy said to Mike with a startled tremor in her voice. “What’s wrong? It’s just a phone, I’ve had it forever. Tell me! What’s wrong?”

Lindy realized the answers lay with Marc, and she ran out the door, heading for her room.  The door to her room was open. Swinging around the corner, she was just in time to see Marc shaking her purse violently over the bed, all the contents tumbling out. Spying the phone in the clutter, his hand reached out to snatch it up.

Halfway there, he froze as the light came on and it began to ring. Marc’s stare widened as they both stood in shock. Lindy’s breath caught in her throat as she watched Marc. He held his finger to his lips, shaking his head at her. Then, holding his hand, palm outward in a motion to tell her not to move, he flipped the phone open.

“Allo?” Marc’s voice was loud. Lindy could not hear the man on the other end, but Marc could.

“Who is this?" a harsh voice demanded.

“Ah, monsieur! This must be your phone, no?” Marc’s accent was thick. “I found this phone on the road to Auberge. Is it yours?” There was a pause, then the sinister voice replied, “Nice try!" Menacing laughter filled the air. “Warning is given!” The phone went dead with a cold, metallic clack.

Lindy was dumbfounded. What had she just witnessed? Baffled, she turned to see Father Mike behind her. He spoke one grim sentence to Marc, ignoring Lindy.“You confessed too easily.”

“I know, damn it! He caught me off guard! I am sorry, Mike, you were right!” Marc told him.

“What did he say?” Mike asked in a hushed tone.

“He just complimented me on my innovative misinformation techniques.” Marc sighed. “They found her, you know. What are we going to do now?”

"No, Marc," Mike's fear shook his voice. "They just found all of us!"
