Matthew 23:12 “For whoever considers himself important shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be esteemed.”

Why do we take pride in things, regardless of them being significant or insignificant? We take pride in things so fragile, such as our religion, nationality, last name, physical looks, intellect, things we have accomplished. And to escape from our sense of superiority we have cultivated humility. When we escape from our prideful ways to an ideal, nothing has changed; we are still very much proud. We have just done a crafty job of suppressing it.

Many believe that the opposite of pride is humility, but if that is true then humility is born out of pride; and that is not humility. Humility can have no opposite, because opposites are born out of each other. That is to say, if one is violent, the idea of non-violence is born because one is rabid, resentful, chaotic, and so on. Since one does not like, for many reasons, the feeling of violence, one invents the ideal of non-violence. So if non-violence is the opposite of violence, then in the non-violence is the inclusion of violence.

I am reminded of the story of Buddha’s disciple:

Subhuti discovered the richness and abundance of emptiness, the realization that everything is impermanent, disappointing and empty. In this frame of mind of divine emptiness, he sat in enjoyment under a tree, and flowers began falling around him.

The gods whispered to him, “We are captivated by our transcendental teachings on emptiness.”

Subhuti replied, “I’ve never spoken about emptiness.”

The gods replied, “That is true; for that is true emptiness.”

True humility is not aware of itself, it is not something to be boasted about and it is not the result of repressions. The mind that is humble is not concerned with rewards, whether they are earthly or spiritual. A mind that is concerned with either reward or punishment is not a humble mind.
