Stroke is the commonest neurological disease in adults. It frequently results in serious morbidity and high mortality. It also has a significant impact on those who survive it and on their families, especially on their emotional wellbeing, personal social relationships and their ability to engage in gainful employment and to pursue leisure activities.

The prognosis for survival and for functional recovery in stroke has improved in recent years thanks to the recent advances in the management of cerebrovascular disease. A vast amount of scientific data about all aspects of stroke has been publiished in recent years and it is important that this informatiion is available to busy clinicians in a concise and the clinically relevant form. About the Author

THE AUTHOR, PROFESSOR A. MAGID. O. BAKHEIT GRADUATED FROM LVOV MEDICAL SCHOOL (USSR) WITH HONOURS AND TRAINED IN NEUROLOGY IN LONDON AND GLASGOW. HE HOLDS TWO DOCTORATE DEGREES (MD & PhD) FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW, AND A MASTER DEGREE AND DIPLOMA OF CLINICAL NEUROLOGY FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON. HE IS ALSO A FELLOW OF THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF LONDON.

PROFESSOR BAKHEIT STARTED HIS ACADEMIC CAREER AS A LECTURER IN CLINICAL NEUROLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW AND LATER BECAME SENIOR LECTURER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON. IN 1997 HE WAS APPOINTED PROFESSOR OF NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION AT PLYMOUTH POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL SCHOOL AND SUBSEQUENTLY THE PENINSULA MEDICAL SCHOOL, UNIVERSITIES OF EXETER & PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND. HE IS ALSO AN HONORARY CONSULTANT WITH PLYMOUTH PRIMARY CARE NHS TRUST.
