I grew up in the California foothills. By the age of nine I was into pond fishing with my friend. I still remember to this day returning to that pond trying to catch 'old faithfull'. We did not have much tackle so my buddy used his dads lure and I used my brothers very large hook with my zebco combo. I finally caught that big old fish using a minnow, but I almost lost my pole too. I was playing and not watching.
From that time on I fished every chance I got. Fishing is a love of mine. There are so many memories I cannot get anywhere else. The sights and sounds of nature, landing my first lunker bass, a limit of trout, are just a few of my memories.
In my younger days there were fishing times that I got no fish. With lifes responsibilities, time is important. Not wanting to waste time, I always use a style of fishing that is easy and gets fish often. I currently, and for many years, use all the methods detailed in my book. This is the main reason for writing this book- it works.
After high school, I studied writing for a couple semesters at a local college. After that, I worked in a lumber mill, (twenty-eight years), until they shut it down. Since then I have had a couple good jobs and I am still working today. I have four good children. Three are grown adults now, and I still have a teenage girl at home. My children all like fishing and we get together a few times each year.
I am now an author, reporter, columnist, and do live fishing
shows. www.oldschoolbasicfishing.com
My life has truly been a good life and I am thankful.
DURING A TROUT PLANT
If you are lucky enough to be there during a trout plant,
your odds for a limit gets better. Newly planted trout school
along the bank for a few hours before scattering. Wear your
polarized glasses for maximum vison. This is a good time for
ultra light gear with four pound test line. Cast small lures,
tiny jigs, or a single worm when you see the school. If the
trout ignore what you are using, quickly change to something
else because they will return. Do not forget to set your reel
drag because these fish can be real strong.
KOKANEE
Kokanee fishing means boating. Sometimes one will be
caught from the bank using a lure, but most are caught in
the main lake body by trolling.
Like trout, kokanee like cool water. This means top line
trolling during the early season. Many kokanee are hooked
by trolling a single lure, using nothing else during this time.
Troll very slow for kokanee.
Kokanee fishing in later season, (warm water), requires
deep trolling with a downrigger. You will need some type of
attracter in front of the lure you are trolling. My favorite
set up is a chrome dodger attracter with a chrome and orange
needlefish lure, but there are many good products for the
kokanee. Also, the local tackle shop is always your best source
for current information.
