“Red, White and Blue”
Waking up with a fresh shave
Rifle in hand at all times
Blisters on the feet from boots
Needing a warm shower and real food
We march on.
Bank accounts empty with little pay
Family far away filled with worries
Honor and glory in the uniform
Thankful to be alive
We march on.
Homesick in this foreign place
Praying for falling brothers
Listening to the loud bangs all day and night
Live rounds flying by
We march on.
Wife found a new lover
Got the letter the other day
Daughter took her first step
Uncle died a couple days ago
We march on.
Little children walk by with guns
Picturing them as your own
They’ve shot before
Will they today
We march on.
Six months went by
Can’t go home
New orders for more time
Another letter to send home
We march on.
Watching others go crazy
Shooting themselves in the head
Carrying their casket to the plane
They get to go home
We march on.
No recliner to watch the big game
No family cookouts
Holidays pass one by one
Children don’t know their father
We march on.
No vacation
No calling in sick
Working 24-7
Trying to sleep through the noise
We march on.
Defending your country
Protesters everyday
Saluting the flag
Praying for the end
We march on.
Leaving today
Another place to go
It won’t be home
Home is no longer known
We march on.
This poem is dedicated to the United States armed forces.
It represents a different struggle that most don’t see or experience.
Never look down on these brave soles, they too put their pants on one leg at a time.
There are many families that have lost someone they love defending this country we all take for granted.
Keep them in your hearts.
