Bob Brackin lives in Orlando, Florida. He’s a 1975 graduate of the University of Central Florida, with a B.A. degree in English.
My earliest recollection was standing outside the Blue Lagoon Motel at night with my older brother and sister. My father was in the Navy and had been transferred to Key West from Lexington Park, Maryland. We had arrived in Key West and checked into the Blue Lagoon Motel.
Outside the motel there was literally a canal, and we stood by the canal, taking in our new surroundings.
My next recollection was getting out of the family car on the first morning at my new school. I stood on the sidewalk, looking at the kids in the yard, in front of the two-story stone schoolhouse. One kid was chasing another and speaking a language other than English. I’d never heard that before.
My next recollection was my next school called Poinciana Elementary. The teacher’s name....
