About the Book

German Memories in Asia is a collection of memories by the author Rajkumar Kanagasingam, in his association with the German university students, who have been volunteering in Asia under an internship program.

German Memories in Asia narrates the fascinating early human migration from Africa to the rest of the world and the sensitive issues of Asian and European historical events, especially the German, since the Roman Empire era and about the Germans in Latin America, North America, East European countries and elsewhere in the world and their migrations, life styles, encounters and assimilations since ancient times.

It analyses the First and Second World War issues of Dresden Bombing, German POW crisis and more.

It explores the author's encounters in his early days in the war-ravaged Jaffna Peninsula in the northern part of the Indian Ocean 's war-torn island and then as an officer in an American NGO in the jungles under the control of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and then in a tsunami relief mission there with German students.

The book is a memorable testimony for German students' life and fashion in Asia at their residency at the Aquarius Resorts in Marawila, a sleepy western coastal town of Sri Lanka facing the scenic Indian Ocean!

A Mission in Asia: A Visit to Tsunami-Hit Coastal Areas of Indian Ocean

I was travelling with German university students towards the tsunami-hit northern part of the Indian Ocean’s war-torn island in the Alpha – 9 highway, which was famous when the military operation was in full swing some years ago.

While I was on my tsunami-relief mission, still those moments came to my mind.

In the morning of 26th of December 2004, people were running here and there in our residential area where we were staying in Colombo. I went towards the canal where I could see the seawater was moving backwards at a high speed. I was surprised for a moment at what was happening around. A strange atmosphere prevailed around there.

There were hundreds of people coming towards the sea and having a look at it. The sea level had gone unusually down and we could see some of the rocks in the sea that were normally invisible.

Germanic Migration & Invasion into Roman Empire

While I was narrating the migration of Nagas and other tribes towards the Island, our discussion went back to before the Christian era of Europe where some of the Germanic tribes from Scandinavia were migrating towards the Northern part of today’s Germany.

The southward movement of Germanic tribes were probably influenced by a deteriorating climate in Scandinavia around 600 BC - 300 BC. The warm and dry climate of southern Scandinavia which was a couple of degrees warmer than today, deteriorated considerably, which not only dramatically changed the flora, but forced people to change their way of living and to leave their settlements.

The Fascination of Being at One with Two Worlds!

The fascination of being at one with two worlds was an unforgettable experience in my life and reminded me of the German-Portuguese student Faith Dennis’s memories in Southern Brazil, “My year abroad taught me a lot of different things; the main lesson was not to create opinions of people based on outdated and unfounded clichés, as these can only create walls in our minds and stop us from delving into and thus enjoying the richness and differences foreign cultures have to offer.”
