About the Book

Drop Dead and other words of wisdom:

A collection of radio essays that distill years of market wisdom into about 90 seconds bites

In this third update you can read the original observations and then the details of just how brilliant those observations were by following how the companies and stocks performed after the original pieces were written.

No one word or phrase captures the range of these essays.  The entire investing world is explained, skewered and observed.  Mistakes are laid bare.  Lessons are learned.  Techniques are mastered. < Alright – mastered may be a little strong > Techniques are described.

Experienced investors will chuckle knowingly.  Novices will scribble notes in the margin.  Day traders will see the light.  My mother will shake her head in confused disbelief “This is the child that gets published ???  Why couldn’t it have been one of the smart ones ??”

Be the first on your block to own the third edition of Words of Wisdom --  my favorite kind of trilogies … the kind where we only need to edit the first two.

FAQ :

How many decades ago did Bill learn about the stock market?  Less than one --  My exposure to the markets began during the heydays of the late 90’s, which was difficult.  I am such a huge fan of logic and reason that I couldn’t make heads nor tails of what was happening.

How did you hook up such a hot babe as a wife?  Mere chance and happenstance.  Although she claims to be a Florida native, I am pretty sure that she is actually a foreign-born national with severely limited vision and some sort of immigration issue.

What makes you uniquely qualified to write this book ?  Learning the market through full immersion in the daily three hour radio merged with my natural curiosity and desire to explain things to myself in terms that I truly understood- sports and pop culture.

Over four years ago, one of the hosts of the daily radio show I produced came up with a brilliant idea.  He would write a daily 90-second radio feature piece that would serve to promote our one-hour call-in financial show and be available as a vehicle to help sell advertising.

The idea was great.  Execution a little weak.

He wrote three articles.  On the fourth day, he rested.  He still doesn’t think it’s funny if I point out that he put in half the time God did making the earth and everything on it.  I filled in.  For the next six months, I wrote daily pieces that he would read and occasionally edit to fit his delivery style.  They were added as “Words of Wisdom” on the website.  Eventually I started reading the pieces as well as writing them.

I have written over 400 of these sometimes timely, sometimes timeless, Investment Strategies that combine a piece of pop culture with its relevance to the world of investing.  We have whittled the total down to just over 40.  I wish they were all the best stories, or the best advice, or even the cleverest twists on life at the turn of the century.  That would have made them easier to describe.

As written, these are the ones that stand the test of time. Some reflect a totally different world – a time of runaway bull markets and fractions.  Others talk about authors and movies, pizzas and eggs, Jeopardy® and new proposed government declaration forms.  Some are funny and some were supposed to be funny, but all give an investor a little something to think about.

We’ve gone through and added some historic perspective to give you some sense of how true the commentary still is.

And in deference to my editor (and wife), there are only a handful of baseball- or football-themed strategies included.  [Words of Wisdom] Vol. II could easily be all sports references, all the time.

Since these were written to be radio features, feel free to read them aloud. Plus, this book offers you a built-in timer for your trips to “the reading room.”  Enjoy.

This third printing has been re-edited for 2006 with additional insight and information.    And a new name, Drop Dead.  Thanks to my friend Bob DiPilato and my ex-wife.  No not like that … Gawd – no !!   After Bob heard my favorite Word of Wisdom, he pointed out that that was a much better name than the very generic “Words of Wisdom” from the first two printings.

Many thanks to Bob for a great idea and a thank or two to my ex-wife for her parting comments.  Although she has finally taken responsibility for the whole divorce thing…  in fact she told me – in confidence – that if she had better taste in men – “none of this ever would have happened.”  That’s taking responsibility and that’s good enough for me.
