Author's Note:

I began writing Apollo Rises over thirty years ago. Back then, I could not tell Apollo’s story, because U.S. Government cryptographic systems that are essential to this story were classified. Those classified cryptographic systems were valuable targets of Soviet espionage agents. Now, U.S. Government declassification schedules permit me to tell Apollo’s story to the detail that I always wanted to tell it.

Commander Watson asks, “Do you know how to protect TOP SECRET information that you have in your head?”

Rigney nods and replies, “Yes, sir … I can only discuss with those who have a TOP SECRET clearance and who also have a need-to-know.”

“That's right. What follows is classified TOP SECRET. Someone aboard a U.S. Navy warship is passing classified information to the Soviets. I need you to go aboard that ship, discover who he is, and how he is doing it.

Rigney’s eyes go wide in disbelief. “You want me to be a spy?”

“Counterespionage agent is a more accurate description.”

“Hello, Thomas. Welcome back to Europe.”

“Happy to be back,” Thomas replied as he shook Javier’s hand.

“Thomas, my friend, you are in a good mood today.”

“I am seldom in a bad mood, but I always have worries on my mind.”

“What worries you these days?” Javier asked as he looked directly into Thomas' eyes.

“I worry that someday my partnership with you will be discovered. Then, my life is over. I will spend the rest of my life in jail.”

“Thomas, if I were to give you unconditional freedom today, would you accept it?”

Thomas answered immediately, “No! … Please do not confuse my worry with a desire to end what we do. In the beginning, I did what you wanted out of fear. Now, I have my own motivations, and I enjoy a comfortable lifestyle as a result. Only if I thought my activities were about to be discovered would I request an end to it.”
