PROLOGUE
June 22
...I awoke a second time and heard that tune again. Then, I heard
it again! It was beautiful. The few notes that I heard sounded like
they were played on an old church pipe organ. The notes seemed to be
calling out to me. They did sound familiar, but I could not remember
where I had heard them before.
This was turning out to be a very strange night. I just had to go
outside! I got up, got dressed, grabbed a flashlight, and went
outside, into the cold, wet fog.
It was eerie. Some of the houses that I passed had their porch
lights on. The lights glowed spookily yellow through the thick fog.
Dogs were barking and howling at something. I felt like I was in an
old werewolf movie.
I noticed something else that was very strange. A lot of the
lawns needed some big time mowing! Most of the bushes and trees
needed serious trimming. I kept smacking into branches! Grrrrr, this
is getting me mad! I dropped my flashlight in someone's two-foot-high
lawn, but fortunately I found it in the tall grass. What is the
problem with these people!? There is no way that I'm turning back
now!
I kept moving forward. Every once in a while, I would hear that
tune. I followed the direction of where it was coming from.
I must have walked for a couple of blocks. It was so foggy, it
was hard to tell just how far I had walked. There were blockades with
lights on top of them at the corners of the streets I now passed.
I then found myself standing outside of a very high, barbed wire
fence. I didn't exactly know where I was, but something was not
right. I walked along the fence, trying to find the opening. I heard
the tune one more time. It was coming from behind the fence! I walked
and walked. That fence was a whole block long! What is inside of it?
About, every thirty yards or so, there was a tower, with lights on!
Wait a second... this is a guarded area!
As I walked further, I could see military type vehicles parked
inside and out. What is this place? I don't ever remember a place
like this when I lived here before! I turned my flashlight off. I was
starting to get scared. Why does the military and that tune seem so
familiar now? With my flashlight off, I was practically blind. I
certainly did not want to get caught!
I thought I heard something. As I moved away from one of the
towers, I could make out two flashlights coming slowly my way. I
heard talking. Guards! I hid in-between the tower and the fence. I
held my breath as the guards walked by. Did I hear them speak
Russian!?
They kept going for a few feet, stopped, and opened a huge gate.
A few moments later, three big, silver vehicles drove through. I
could now see some scientist looking guys leaving the vehicles. They were carrying weird electronic stuff. They were all heading for a
shadowy building. It was still very hard to see anything clearly.
All of a sudden, a huge, mean, guard dog, that was inside, jumped
up against the fence that was separating us and started barking like
crazy! I almost had a heart attack! I decided that it was time to go
and make a break for it!
I got onto the sidewalk and started to move out. Rats! I saw
flashlights heading my way again! More guards are coming right at me!
I looked in every direction, but all I could see was fog. Wait!
What's that? In the distance... What is that crimson-colored glow?
Now it turned green! A traffic light! A street! Go for it!
I ran my fastest. If I can make it across that street, those
guards will never get me! As I got closer to the light, something
told me to watch out for the bush. In the fog, I couldn't see a
thing, but somehow, I knew there was a bush right before the
streetlight. I stuck out my hand. Swack! It hit a big branch from the
bush! Man, doesn't anyone trim bushes anymore? No time to think about
that now. The light just turned yellow. Red would be coming soon! I
could see the headlights from the cars waiting to go. If I don't make
it across that foggy street, I could be hit! I jumped off the curb
perfectly onto the street. I knew that I had done that before. I
quickly glanced behind me and saw the two flashlights moving up and
down. I knew those guards were running toward me, but that they
couldn't see me because of the fog. The light turned red! The cars
are coming! Time for one final jump! Here goes...!
I landed perfectly on the sidewalk, but slipped! Bam! Right on my
face! That wasn't supposed to happen. I had braced myself for the big
meeting with the cement sidewalk, but I slid on some vines or ivy
that had grown over it. I didn't dare move. I knew that the fog
covered me. I didn't hear the voices, but I stayed on the ground,
just in case. As soon as I catch my breath, I'm getting away from
here fast!
While waiting on the cold, wet sidewalk, my hands felt something
deeply carved into the concrete that was under the vines. I couldn't
see a thing, so I traced over the writings with my two hands. What!?
It can't be! I turned on my flashlight to be sure. What!? I thought
to myself that it couldn't be, but there it was. Bathed in the yellow
glow, caused by my flashlight shining in the fog, still engraved in
the cement sidewalk, just the way it looked over a decade ago, was...
The Unclass
If this is here, then that means that inside that guarded
security area is...is...oh no! That's why I felt like I had done
those things before and knew the bush was there!
Just at that moment, I heard shouting and dogs barking. The
guards are coming! I ran and ran and ran...
