About the Book

Written primarily for children, but suitable for any audience, Nanotechnology for Grades 1-6+ is a glimpse into the exciting new field of study in science and engineering for the new millennium, known as nanotechnology.  Nanotechnology promises to affect our lives in many ways over the next twenty years, biologically, environmentally, scientifically, and technically. This book will give you a basic understanding of why nanotechnology has become the new “buzz word” in science and why and how scientists, businessmen, engineers, and medical researchers are clamoring to find out more about how we can control and manipulate matter on the atomic scale.

About the Author

Andrea J. Harmer lives with her two children, James and Laura, and her two little dogs, Jessie and Bandit in southeastern Pennsylvania. Her dog Bandit is the model for Bucky Dog because both of them are extremely inquisitive and both of them are cheeky monkeys (see glossary for definition of that one!)  Ms. Harmer is happily married to her handsome and supportive British husband, Martin, who helps her to understand nanotechnology so that she may pass it on to others.

In 1985, scientists discovered buckyballs in a new series of carbon atoms by accident. While the scientists were looking for something else, they noticed something they had never seen before….

Buckminster Fuller, who was honored in 2004 by having his picture put on a United States postage stamp, thought of that buckyball shape twenty years before the scientists knew it existed in nature… double wow!
