Introduction
Throughout
history there are stories of love and there are stories of war. This is a story
where love meets war and the consequences are devastating. It is a true
story, one that takes place many years ago at a time and place where life was
so different. Yes, life was different as every day was a challenge and survival
was the goal.
The
story is of a young girl named Ellen and a young boy named John who grow up and
fall in love, only to be denied the togetherness that they so desperately need.
He
was brave and she was strong, and together they faced a life of
uncertainty. They didn’t want much but they did want each other and
they both knew they deserved no less. But what they received was nothing short
of unimaginable pain.
Soon
after they had begun their life as one, the world around them began to crumble
and their lives would change forever. Families were being torn apart, and lives
were being destroyed. What would happen to them?
While
their story unfolds, stories of their families, friends and neighbors come to
life, showing what life was like yesterday in the Dutch Fork of South Carolina.
The names and dates are factual, and are substantiated through family letters,
family records and the United States Federal Census.
This
book will be enjoyed by history buffs, as well as, by anyone who enjoys a love
story that endures under the harshest of conditions.
