This gentle story is about an old fox that lives on a rough, cold mountain. He always thinks about chickens, though it is difficult for him to hunt. I leave the rest to the young readers to find out how the old fox got himself into trouble.

This story intends to entertain children. Hopefully, they will learn a few thoughtful things from the story: helping others is an excellent thing and stealing leads to trouble. They will also learn how a fox can be deceitful in order to survive.

Azad A. Mayi was born in 1966 in the Kurdish village of Mayi. He fled to Mardin, Turkey with thousands of Kurds from Saddam Hussein’s regime in 1988. Mayi immigrated to the United States of America in 1992. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife Fagir and two sons, Amange and Ahva,  who have inspired him to write for children.

After leaving the University of Mousil in 1988, the author began writing poems, short stories, children’s stories, and articles for Kurdish magazines and newspapers.

This story is the first of Azad A. Mayi’s to be translated into English by Salih A. Mayi.

Salih is the author’s brother, who also fled to Turkey in 1988 and immigrated to the United States in 1992. Salih also lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife Hozan. He graduated from Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree in biology.

Under a hill in a snowy, mountainous area, there once was an old fox that lived in a dark hole by himself. Down the hill was a small village set by the riverbank.

The old fox stayed home most of the time. He only went out when he had to eat.

One cold winter evening, the old fox was hungry, and his belly was growling. So he went out to look for some food to fill his empty stomach.

When he walked out the door, all he saw was snow, snow, and more snow.  He raised his head and listened. It was very quiet around him. He started walking down the hill slowly.  His legs were covered in deep snow. His bushy tail lay over the snow. He kept walking. He sometimes looked around for prey, but it wasn’t his lucky day.
