Shadows As the sun follows the twist and turns of our life road Shadows will trail or so we are told Some start short then taller they grow Some would say the shadows are our soul They walk the path we all recognize and go The light it shines and the shadow will show Tranquil hour that hits at noon The night will come but the shadows immune The stars gleam brightly, but the morning sun will shine The shadow will assemble becoming an instinctual design When the shadow is absent and weary it grows Left on earth is the memories we sew

The laughter still rings through her home, the smell of his room, the trophies displayed on his shelf, the little pieces of paper with friend’s numbers scattered in his top drawer. Every word she has ever spoken for the past 21 years plays over and over in her mind. Her dreams stacked in a neat little pile in the corner of her room, for her dreams would be on hold while she lived through the eyes of her son. A knock on the door defined her future. Her life now a manifestation of her past, for her future would repeat every 11th day of the month, a reminder of the dreadful knock on her door. A flag draped coffin her son would arrive on a snowy December day. The tears that fall from a mother’s heart, her sorrow, her memories and her love will linger in your soul.
About the Author
Every time I see a maple tree it brings me back to my childhood and my dear friend Beth, I always find myself smiling. A bad day could never occur along with her giving you advice, she being the person who would make you giggle, that’s the moment you would realize it’s really not that bad after all. Beth Goncalo was born and resides in Fall River, Massachusetts; a small city roughly 30 miles south of Boston. She lives in a working class neighborhood with her family. As a young girl she could always be found sitting under the maple tree in her back yard with a pencil and note book writing her every thought. I would sit on the side of her and try to get a glimpse of what she would be writing, always wondering how she could make me feel better with just a few words; as an adult I realized she could be whomever she wished to be when she was sitting under that maple tree. It is no surprise that her journey through life can be relived through her collection of poetry. Her life seemed complete, always her own person, never doubting herself. However a cold December day it became my turn to help my friend find the laughter in her heart, I needed to find a way to put her back under that maple tree where we spent so many days as children, she again needed to wish and dream for things that could be. I wish I could open one of those old notebooks and find the words that would make her giggle. On December 11, 2010 Beth received the news that her son Ethan had passed away while serving his country in Kabul, Afghanistan. She was inspired to write this latest poetry book “Shadow of a Soldier”, this book is dedicated to her beautiful son Ethan.
