Song of the Urban Thrush
Sounding a tad tormented for nothing.
I think.
Nowhere is a café it, but on a street with a French name.
Unfortunately trapped in Brooklyn, where wifi works better than the espresso machines.
Timeless is the desire to remain anonymous and seen.
Spiritually centered, but in control.
Maximum roller riding coaster crazed, on smoothly re-asphalted side streets.
Punctuality for monotony keeps the stay short.
Walking past countless fronts of old brick structures where
martinis and Sam Adams are sold.
Wanting a tumbler of house red, finding only a short stem growing tasteless conformity.
Musically speaking, thirty years is too short and too long.
Mind floats above boroughs to Burroughs where a racing mind can rest with sounds;
birds,
blues,
A binge of imagination.

About the Book
Written during a time in my life when I was experiencing a number of life changing events, these poems express a fragile yet scientific outlook on survival and existence. In 2006 I was going through Chemotherapy for cancer, finishing a PhD in Applied Physics, and had a newborn daughter. Poetry became not just an outlook for my otherwise very literal work as a scientist, but an important part of my identity. 15 of these poems have been reviewed, or published in journals. This is the first time they appear together, as a recorded history, of the artistic journey of discovering some of life’s biggest challenges.
About the Author
Matthew Putman is an independent musician, scientist, producer and author currently living in Brooklyn, New York with his wife Marine and daughter Juliette. He is a Researcher and Professor at Columbia University. As a musician he has received acclaim from Downbeat magazine and All About Jazz for his first album “Perennial” which was released in August 2008, and the quintet called “The Gowanus Recordings.” Matthew is an inventor who holds patents in several areas including a new microscope with extremely high resolution. He has co-authored technical papers, and received the American Chemical Society Best Paper Award. He was an owner of the technology company Tech Pro. Matthew is also the founder of a new high resolution microscope company called Nanotronics Imaging. Matthew is a published poet. He is also co-authoring a Physics text book in the field of Rheology.
Matthew was a producer of the off-Broadway play “Perdita”, by Pierre-Marc Diennet, with his wife Marine which played at the Lion Theatre on Theatre Row. Matthew and Marine have also worked together as Associate Producers of the award winning film “Definition of Insanity.”
Matthew is an Executive Board Member of The Montauk Observatory and a founding Benefactor of The World Science Festival.
