LOS ANGELES (May 30, 2008) — On-demand and short-run books experienced a “stunning five-fold increase ” in the number of titles published in 2007, according to Bowker – the global leader in bibliographic management. The expansion in self-published and other unclassified titles came amidst “basically flat” growth in the traditional publishing sector.
“Bowker’s report clearly illustrates a changing tide in the book publishing industry. Authors are increasingly turning to self publishing because of the flexibility and limitless options it presents,” said Kevin Weiss, president and chief executive officer of Author Solutions, “Self publishing allows readers and the marketplace, not just a select group of editors, to determine which books are worthy of market success,”
While traditional publishers have seen numbers stagnate, or fall, Author Solutions self-publishing imprints AuthorHouse, iUniverse and Wordclay have continued to put an increasing number of titles into distribution. In 2008, ASI self-publishing brands project to publish nearly 17,000 new titles, or about one out of every eight titles in the on-demand and unclassified category.
“If an author needs it, Author Solutions can provide it. We are the world-leader in the fastest-growing segment of publishing, and we are removing the barriers between authors and readers. We make it possible for anyone, anywhere at any time to put their book into print and get it into the marketplace,” Weiss said.
