AuthorHouse Authors Recognized in Best Books 2005 Competition
List of Honors Keeps Growing for Montgomery, Other Self-Published Scribes
NEW YORK – Author and freelance writer Amy Montgomery knew she had a good story. Her book, Just an Accident (available through AuthorHouse), had even earned a heartfelt endorsement from Christopher Reeve just weeks before his death. Still, she continues to be pleasantly surprised as the awards add up for her touching biography of Scott Remington.
Just an Accident has been named as a finalist in the Best Books 2005 competition, creative nonfiction category, from USABookNews.com, an organization that covers unique works from both the mainstream and independent press. According to its Web site, the mission of USA Book News is to “look beyond the best-seller lists to find fantastic books that are worthy of attention.” Two other AuthorHouse authors were also finalists – Anna Ringo for fantasy/science fiction and Cynthia Borris in the humor category.
Earlier this year, Just an Accident received a gold medal in the 2005 ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards at BookExpo America in New York City. Montgomery was in good company there as well; she was one of six AuthorHouse authors who made the list, and Just an Accident took top honors in the family/relationships category. ForeWord covers books from independent and university press publishers. Its annual awards competition “recognizes excellence, spirit, original voices, and vision in the independent press industry.”
Just an Accident tells the harrowing and heartwarming true story of Remington, an avid outdoorsman who made a living as a logger in the Adirondack Mountains. In 1999 Remington, then 33, became the victim of a near-fatal logging accident that left him paralyzed. Montgomery’s acquaintance with Remington came by way of another victim of tragic circumstance – actor Christopher Reeve. While working on a freelance project for Reeve’s foundation, Montgomery was immediately intrigued when she heard Remington’s story. When Reeve himself later read Just an Accident, he personally endorsed the book.
Montgomery is a New Jersey-based freelance writer who has worked primarily with corporate clients. She has also worked as a radio reporter, press secretary and adjunct professor at the University of Michigan. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan.
