Montgomery Picks Up Gold Medal at ForeWord Book Awards

Author Receives Honor at Nation’s Largest Book Publishing Event

NEW YORK – Author and freelance writer Amy Montgomery knew she had a good story. Her book, Just an Accident (available through AuthorHouse), had even earned a heartfelt endorsement from Christopher Reeve just weeks before his death. Still, she was thoroughly and pleasantly surprised when she received a gold medal in this year’s ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards at BookExpo America in New York City.
Montgomery was one of six AuthorHouse authors who made the list for the 2005 awards. Just an Accident took top honors in the Family & Relationships category. ForeWord covers books from independent and university press publishers. Its annual awards competition “recognizes excellence, spirit, original voices, and vision in the independent press industry.”

Just an Accident tells the harrowing and heartwarming true story of Scott Remington, an avid outdoorsman who made a living as a logger in the Adirondack Mountains. In 1999 Remington, then 33, became the victim of a near-fatal logging accident that left him paralyzed. The fact that he survived at all was only the first miracle to come his way.

Montgomery’s acquaintance with Remington came by way of another victim of tragic circumstance – actor Christopher Reeve. While working on a freelance project for Reeve’s foundation, Montgomery was immediately intrigued when she heard Remington’s story. When Reeve himself later read Just an Accident, he offered the following sentiment:

“In this well written and extremely compelling book, Amy Montgomery draws us into the essence of living with a spinal cord injury through Scott Remington’s moving story … In an instant both Scott and I became members of a club neither of us would ever have wanted to join … Montgomery has captured not only the drama of an accidental tragedy but the power of the human spirit to overcome it.”

Montgomery is a New Jersey-based freelance writer who has worked primarily with corporate clients. She has also worked as a radio reporter, press secretary and adjunct professor at the University of Michigan. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan.
