Bornstein a Finalist in 2005 Book Awards
Harrowing Autobiography Draws Attention at Independent Publisher Event
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It took Yvonne Bornstein nearly 12 years to emotionally conquer the trauma she endured from her abduction, torture and rescue and finally tell her story. She relives her harrowing experience in Eleven Days of Hell: My True Story of Kidnapping, Terror, Torture and Historic FBI and KGB Rescue (available through AuthorHouse). On June 3, 2005, Bornstein was recognized as a finalist in the 2005 Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Awards in New York
On Jan. 6, 1992, Bornstein and former husband, Danny, stepped off an airplane in Moscow on a business trip and stepped into the middle of the political disintegration of the Soviet Union. They had just left the airport when they were kidnapped, beaten, tortured and held for ransom for “11 horrifying days in a dilapidated country house” by a group of what they thought were Russian “gypsies.” In reality, their situation was even more grim than they could have imagined. Their captors were “cold blooded conspirators in a sinister plot that joined the Russian Mob, ex KGB agents and early al-Qaeda operatives” trying to fund terrorism despite the human lives they left in their wake.
Bornstein survived but “will never be free of its painful echoes” from nearly two weeks of torture. Their incredible story culminated in one of history’s most unlikely rescue operations. With the Cold War barely over and murky jurisdiction laws in place, the FBI and KGB combined forces to execute a dangerous rescue mission that brought the couple home.
She relives “the agony, horror and torture” of her captivity while unraveling the twists and turns of her rescue mission from her research into the confidential case. Eleven Days of Hell weaves all the horrific drama and intrigue of a spy novel into a factual account of a historic rescue operation.
Bornstein lives in Southern California with her current husband, Sam. Eleven Days of Hell is her debut book. Her co-author, Mark Ribowsky, has written seven previous books, including He’s a Rebel: Phil Spector, Rock and Roll’s Legendary Producer.
