Award-Winning Journalist Brings New Book of Racial Atrocity to Publishing Industry Event
BLOOMINGTON , Ind. - Award-winning journalist Gary Corsair will be on hand in Chicago for BookExpo America 2004. Corsair delves into the true story of prejudice and violence in a small Florida town that shocked a nation and screamed from headlines across the globe. In July 1949, a 17-year-old white girl reported to police that she was kidnapped and raped by four black men. What followed was an exhibition of corruption, hatred and racism.
Corsair constructed his account by tapping the vivid memories of people who lived through the terrifying nightmares of bloodthirsty mobs and harsh police brutality. His book illustrates the suffering caused by Ku Klux Klan terrorism, lying witnesses and manufactured evidence. The saga concludes in murder at the hands of the same men sworn to uphold the law.
The Groveland Four is the product of exhaustive research into this notorious Civil Rights case, but it is also a forum for the oppressed and accused to tell their tale. Corsair won 15 awards during a distinguished newspaper career that featured stints as a reporter, editor and publisher. The newspapers he headed won 24 state and regional awards for excellence. He began as a sportswriter in the 1970s in Indiana before moving to Florida , where he edited a number of papers.
